Progressive Language

Very few people realise that each and every word we have said, do say and will say, deeply influences the way in which we each experience the world. And this applies equally to what we say to ourselves (internally) and what we say to other people.

Moreover, every word that each of us has already heard, is hearing or will hear – affects us profoundly. The words from our parents, schoolteachers, friends, work colleagues and family deeply affect us from day to day, night to night.

“You are such a stupid child.”

“You look like you are getting a cold.”

“I think I am going to fail.”

“You are getting fatter and fatter!.”

“Be careful or you will crash the car.”

Almost all the language we use is a suggestion or one form or another. In the phrases above you can see the (sometimes embedded) suggestions that we are all making to each other. Maybe we can change the words that we say to each other (or maybe to ourselves!):

“Tonight, I think I will sleep wonderfully.”

“Clever girl, I can see you have a brilliant memory.”

“Later this evening I may find that I have lots of energy.”

“I always remember where I put my car keys.”
